 Aftercare
of Knitted Garments
All garments whether knitted or woven need to be
properly taken care of so as to maintain their longevity and their look.
Here are some useful tips on how you can do so:
- Keep in proper place: Garments should be stored in closed
drawers or wardrobes to avoid dust and dirt because they can damage
an item. But little ventilation is required at times.
- Do not cut snags: Snags in the garment should not be cut
as this will result in the unraveling of your garment. If necessary,
the loose thread can be threaded back into the garment using a
sewing needle with a dull point.
- Read labels: Always read labels carefully when caring
for delicate knits. Many knitted garments require hand washing.
Machine-wash your item if the label allows it. Others may require
dry cleaning only.
- Do not soak overnight: When you hand-wash or machine-wash
the item, do not leave it to soak overnight.
- Flat dry: After hand-wash, flat-dry the garment. It is
advisable not to hang while drying, as the garment will lose its
shape. Some knits can be air-dried on a towel or tumble dried.
- Do not over dry: Never over-dry your clothes. Over drying
causes fabrics to shrink more and wear thinner, and helps elastic
deteriorate.
- Do not press a dirt garment: Generally knitted garments
are wrinkle free. However, leaving aside the woolens, a little press
is required for knitted tops, shirts, skirts etc. But, you should
never press a dirty garment as the heat from the iron may set a
stain.
- Dry Clean: Dry clean your knitted garments sometimes.
Stains at times become permanent as time passes and dirt left in
garments acts like sand paper on the yarns causing excess wear. If
you dry clean, your garments look fresh and clean.
- Use of perfume: Avoid using perfume or deodorant on your
garment. Chemicals in the product can cause a discoloration in
garments.
- Do not try home remedies: Generally try to avoid the urge
to try home remedies. Unless you know exactly what you are doing,
you could easily damage your garment.
- Remove perspiration stains: Perspiration stains leave an
invisible stain which will darken and harden with time, thereby
weakening a garment's fabric. Try to remove the stain by washing in
hot water (if allowed) with sufficient detergent. Otherwise give it
for dry cleaning.
- Avoid high drying temperature: Avoid high drying
temperatures when caring for knitted sportswear. Spring invites the
opportunity for sportswear to gain a lot of wear and tear. Special
care should be given to these knitted sportswear as they are usually
made from synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester and spandex.
Test the garment for colorfastness to avoid color pickup on other
articles, prior to cleaning. Wash in a low temperature to reduce the
chance of bleeding colors. Mud stains require extra treatments
before washing. High temperatures can cause excessive shrinkage and
permanent wrinkles.
